Linda Dement and Nancy Mauro-Flude, Awry Signals

Linda Dement works in arts computing and consistently explores the mysterious leap from the physical to the psychical in her work, working with a visceral futurist and feminist aesthetic allied to the horror trauma and science fictional telepathy of David Cronenberg. Her ‘disturbances’ comingle the digital and electronic with psychosexual corporeality in works such as In My Gash and Cyberflesh Girlmonster. She creates monstrous fusions between the rational and the irrational. Nancy Mauro-Flude is an artist and theorist driven by the ‘dystification’ of technology and the mysticification inherent in machine performance. As a theorist Mauro-Flude explores performance code and the dramaturgy of transmission and as an as founder of Miss Despoinas Critical Engineering Space she created ‘Networked Art and Tacktical Magick Faerie Circuits’ to bring together leading artists, programmers and thinkers working with the maker aesthetic. Awry Signals is a collaboration between Dement and Mauro-Flude, and it explores cosmogenic ritual performance, a raw code séance device, and augmented reality invisible emanations. The artists further introduce the digital electronic code séance with dead female rock stars: “The nearest star system to us, Alpha Centauri, is approximately 4.27 light years away. The last 4.27 years have seen the deaths of: Ari Up of the Slits [20 Oct 2010], Poly Styrene of X-Ray Spex [25 April 2011], Chrissy Amphlett of the Divinyls [21 April 2013]. It is said that dead warriors first disappear beyond all visible horizons to re-appear in multitudinous star clusters. Starlight is a Wi-Fi signal. Sending out awry signals, driven by astro-seismological pulses, connected via luminous augmented reality virtual rays, we ask them questions.”
